The sun is setting on a carefree day idling by a river with childhood friends, plunging into the cool water, reminiscing between laughter; good food, drink and friends - a perfect day.

The drive home is idyllic. Namsai has always felt like a frontier town, a world cut off from anything familiar. We drive past a few isolated houses built from wood and on stilts, in perpetual readiness for the devastating monsoons in this water-locked flat land. I think of the resort we have enjoyed today and the homes beyond these fences we pass. In the dim light of a porch I see a house in disrepair, the harshness of living conditions is inescapable.
